Cardiometabolic Genetics Testing

Imagine having the power to uncover the specific nutrients your body may require more of or gaining insights into conditions you might be prone to. Forum Health Akron offers genetic testing and equips you with choices, offering empowerment to take action that can lower your risks and enhance your overall well-being.

Why Consider Genetic Testing?

Genetic testing offers personalized healthcare by tailoring treatments, assessing disease risks, and guiding nutrition and medication choices based on your genetic makeup. It helps with weight management, hormone balance, understanding the genetic basis of aging, and addressing mental health factors. Importantly, it also supports family health by identifying shared genetic risks. Overall, genetic testing aligns with the patient-centered approach of functional medicine, promoting holistic well-being and long-term health.

What Do Genetic Tests Measure?

Genetic testing looks at your DNA to find genetic variations linked to traits, inherited conditions, and disease risks. It helps identify potential health issues, guide medication choices, and provides insights into ancestry and nutrition. These tests offer important information for medical decisions, family planning, and understanding your genetic background.

When Should You Consider This Test?

Genetic testing should be considered in cases of family history of genetic conditions, for family planning, or when experiencing unexplained health issues. It’s valuable for assessing medication responses, cancer risk, personalized nutrition, and lifestyle guidance, as well as understanding your genetic heritage and ancestry. Whether you have specific health goals, are dealing with mysterious health problems, or are simply curious, genetic testing can provide personalized insights into your genetic makeup. Consulting a healthcare provider or genetic counselor is crucial to determine the right testing and ensure it aligns with your health objectives.

What is MTHFR?

It’s an enzyme involved in biochemical pathways in the body. 40% of people have a mutation with this gene meaning that this enzyme doesn’t work as fast as it should. You can think of it like a traffic jam on a highway where cars are moving at a snail’s pace.

The gene MTHFR is responsible for converting folic acid from your food into methyl-folate which is critical to methylation, the production of DNA, metabolism of hormones and detoxification. Mutations of the gene are fairly common and are often passed down from parent to child. When you have a MTHFR gene mutation it affects your metabolism and how you convert vital nutrients into proteins, minerals and vitamins that your body needs and uses. It can affect hormone and neurotransmitters levels, cholesterol, digestion and cognition.

In this video, Dr. Tara Scott of Forum Health Akron, also known as the hormone guru, explains MTHFR, what it does and who should be tested.
